OBJECT DESCRIPTION AND IMAGE SESSION

Sharpless 2 -13 is an emission nebula region located 2° and a half degrees north from Open Cluster Messier 6 in the constellation of Scorpius. Over the plane of our Milky Way it has a very dim structure which is only possible to distinguish with long exposure astrophotography. Definitely a tough object from my light polluted location in Martinez.

The Sharpless catalogue is a list of 313 (emission nebula) objects grouped by North American astronomer Stewart Sharpless. The first edition was published in 1953 with 142 objects (SH1) and the second edition was published in 1959. The list includes planetary nebulas; supernovas remnants and HII regions as the one shown here. In many cases the list overlaps with Messier and NGC catalogues, and also the Gum and RCW lists which are covering the southern hemisphere.
