OBJECT DESCRIPTION AND IMAGE SESSION
Like a Gem in the middle of the night sky lies this colourful planetary nebula in the Constellation of Puppis 3º from the limit BORDER of Canis Major. NGC 2440 contains the hotter white dwarf known which is not visible in the image. HD62166 is about 200.000 Cº The nebula was created by a "Sun like star" which had expulsed it external layers material in the last stages of its life. The red star to de left is SAO153271 shining at magnitude 8.46
NGC 2440 was discovered by German / British astronomer William Herschel on March 4, 1790. He described it as "a beautiful planetary nebula of a considerable degree of brightness, not very well defined.
